US President Donald Trump has escalated the trade war with China, and has imposed a 145% tariff on Beijing.
While he had earlier announced 125% tariffs on China, the White House has now clarified that these new tariffs would be imposed in addition to an already existing fentanyl-related tariff of 20%. This came after China imposed an 84% tariff on US, in retaliation to Trump's earlier-announced 104% tariffs on China.
Trump had initially levied a total 54% tariff on Beijing, which was quick to retaliate with a 34% tariff on the US.
Meanwhile, Trump has announced a 90-day pause on "retaliatory" tariffs for over 75 countries, merely 12 hours after his 'Liberation Day' tariffs came into effect.
He has now kept a baseline tariff of 10% for all the nations that reached out to the US, seeking a trade deal.
